ZOYSIA IN THE LANDSCAPE Back to Top

If you live in a warm climate, have a sunny, well drained site, and want the most attractive lawn you can grow, you probably want zoysia. Zoysia needs rather exacting care, but it has a very fine texture that gives it a luxurious look. In winter when it is dormant, zoysia is a light buff color that contrasts well with evergreen shrubs.

Sun, ample moisture, and good soil fertility are crucial to success with zoysia.

Zoysia grows best in full sun, but some selections can handle a slight bit of shade. The Emerald selection has good shade tolerance.

A zoysia lawn will survive periodic droughts, but if you want it to look picture perfect, you will need to provide extra water when dry spells last longer than a week.

Zoysia responds dramatically to being properly fed. Fertilize it right, and your zoysia will "knit" itself into a tight turf that naturally resists weeds.

BEAUTIFUL ZOYSIA, SEASON BY SEASON Back to Top

You can have a beautiful zoysia lawn by following an easy Vigoro Ultra Turf Step-by-Step Annual Lawn Care Program. Together with proper mowing and watering, these measures will help zoysia grow strong and healthy.

Zoysia spreads slowly, but occasional edging is needed to keep it from spreading into flower or shrub borders. Most people who grow zoysia edge it often to give the lawn a tailored look.

VIGORO ULTRA TURF STEP-BY-STEP ANNUAL LAWN CARE PROGRAM Back to Top

To get weed problems under control, follow the Vigoro Ultra Turf Step-by-Step Annual Lawn Care Program shaded in purple.  If your lawn is already in good condition, follow the Vigoro Ultra Turf Step-by-Step Annual Lawn Care  Program shaded in blue. You can start either program during any season, but the key is to complete a full year.   After a year you will see marked improvements in your lawn.  When applying any lawn care product, always read the entire label first and follow directions.   Be especially careful with weed control products and use only products labeled for use on zoysia.

    PRODUCT

    DESCRIPTION

    Vigoro Ultra Turf Crabgrass Preventer

Keeps crabgrass seeds and other grassy weeds from germinating. Crabgrass Preventer with Dimension® keeps on killing crabgrass up to 4 weeks after it sprouts. Dimension® also prevents the sprouting of many broadleaf weeds, such as spurge, chickweed, and henbit.

Vigoro Ultra Turf Weed and Feed

Kills broadleaf weeds that are actively growing and feeds the lawn at the same time. For best results apply it when weeds are still young and vigorously growing. Don't wait. Mowing a couple of days before applying will help stimulate new growth of older weeds.

    Vigoro Ultra Turf Turf Fertilizer

Should contain a combination of fast-release nitrogen to green the lawn quickly and timed-release nitrogen to feed grass for up to 2 or 3 months.

    Lime

Raises the pH of soil that is too acidic. Easy Lime® is an easy-to-use, granular lime that is not as dusty as ordinary lime.

    Vigoro Ultra Turf Winterizer

Contains timed-release nitrogen and extra potassium to help lawns endure winter stress and green up quickly in spring.

    Insect Control

Is important for the control of white grubs, fleas, cutworms, and other major lawn pests. If these have been a problem in your lawn, apply Insect Control early, while the pests are still young. You can also apply Vigoro Ultra Turf Summer Fertilizer with Insect Control to combine feeding and control in one easy application.

VIGORO ULTRA TURF TIPS FOR BETTER ZOYSIA Back to Top

    • Always use a fertilizer spreader to spread lawn care products evenly. If you apply Vigoro Ultra Turf Crabgrass Preventer or Vigoro Ultra Turf Weed and Feed, use a drop-type spreader for accurate application at the edge of flower and shrub beds. A broadcast spreader can throw weed control into the planting area where it may cause damage.
    • Limit wear of the lawn in winter when it is dormant. Worn spots become prime places for weeds.
    • If more than a 1/2-inch layer of thatch is present (thatch is dead stems and debris that accumulate at the soil's surface), thin and clean your zoysia with a power rake in spring or early summer, after new growth has begun. Most zoysia lawns need dethatching every 2 to 3 years.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION Back to Top

    Working with Zoysia

Weed and feed products are a big help in growing a good zoysia lawn, but there is no substitute for keeping a close eye on the condition of your grass. Weed problems often are more severe where winters are so long that zoysia is dormant for more than 5 months. So even though zoysia is the most cold-hardy of all the warm-season grasses, be prepared to combat weeds at the northern limits of its growing range.

If nothing less than perfection will do, invest in a reel-type mower that cleanly clips off the stiff blades of zoysia. More common rotary type mowers will work provided the blade is sharp, but they do not cut zoysia as evenly as do reel-type machines. Gather clippings in a bagger if you have persistent problems with accumulating thatch.

Regardless of which type of mower you use, it is crucial to mow zoysia often. Choose a mowing height that works well for you (between 1 and 2 inches) and mow as frequently as needed to keep the grass from becoming too tall. Level sites can be mowed closer than lawns that have bumps and low places. If you find that certain spots appear scalped after mowing, fill them in with small amounts of soil gradually, until they are raised to the level of the rest of the lawn
