PHILODENDRONS

The name "philodendron" means "tree-loving" -- a name that describes the tree-climbing habit of South and Central American vining philodendrons. Vining philodendron don't actually climb on their own, however. They must be tied or leaned against a moisture-absorbing support until they shape themselves to it. And not all philodendrons are vining in their habit. Self-heading philodendron form new growth at the base, branching and then growing along the ground. This class is good as houseplants on table tops or for cascading from a balcony. Another class of philodendrons grows as much as 8 feet tall and has large leaves and sturdy, self-supporting trunks. These plants grow indoors but need much more space than other houseplants. Especially good for large containers, they can be used for "tropical jungle" effects or as silhouettes against walls or glass.

As a general rule, philodendrons are durable plants with attractive, leathery, usually glossy leaves in heart, spear and paddle shapes. Some are deeply cut. There are thousands of hybrids from hundreds of species.

FERTILIZING PHILODENDRONS

Philodendrons are noted for how easy they are to grow. They can be grown from cuttings or fresh seed, or by air layering. For best results, keep them between 60° to 70° at night and 70° to 80° during the day, preferably in humid air. Philodendron should be given bright light but not direct sun. They should be misted often and watered often while growing, with less water in winter. Philodendrons do well in average potting soil with organic matter. Soggy soil leads to root rot, but the soil should be kept evenly moist. They should be repotted only when very root-bound.

Established philodendrons should be fed with a liquid houseplant fertilizer such as VigoroŽ All Purpose Liquid Plant Food about once a month -- less in winter and more in spring and summer. Leaves should be dusted and sponged frequently.
