TIP

SEDUM

Sedum is a large genus that includes many species, including those used for ground covers. They are succulents with thick, fleshy leaves filled with water. Smaller, low-growing sedums are useful in rock gardens, as ground and bank covers and in small areas where unusual texture and color are needed. Larger sedums are effective as borders. Most sedum species have attractive flowers, and some are grown for their colorful and/or variegated leaves. Size, shapes, color and growth patterns vary.

FERTILIZING SEDUM

Sedum plants need good drainage, especially in winter. Otherwise, they do well in most soils, especially to cover hot, dry sites including slopes. They are easy to propagate by stem or leaf cuttings or from seed.

Division is easy but usually unnecessary. Soft and easily crushed, they will not stand up to foot traffic. Otherwise, they are tough, low-maintenance plants. In mid-spring, feed it with VigoroŽ All Purpose Granules or water-soluble plant food. Mulch between them in spring and fall until the plants are established. Afterward, mulching in the summer provides weed control.
