PACHYSANDRA

Pachysandra plants are low-growing evergreen perennials used for ground cover in shady places. They grow slowly but surely via a network of underground runners. It has been said of pachysandra: The first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps, and the third year it leaps. It makes a thick, dense bed and is the perfect solution to covering ground around tree trunks where sunlight is scarce and mowing difficult. Pachysandra grows up to a foot tall and has attractive, dark green, tooth-edged leaves arranged in whorls. The white-flower spikes that arrive in spring are neither numerous nor conspicuous. White berries that follow are even less noticeable. Pachysandra are ideal for all shady areas, for edging and as a border around the house foundation. Plants are deer-resistant.

FERTILIZING PACHYSANDRA

Pachysandra can be grown in full or part shade, but does not perform well in sunny spots. It grows well in any ordinary soil, but it shouldn't be too dry and should be on the acid side (pH of 5.5 to 6.5). Place pachysandra deeper than it was in the flat so more roots will form along the stems. It roots very easily from cuttings. Newly planted pachysandra requires mulch, but it grows so quickly not much mulch is required later. Water frequently until established and fertilize during the growing season.

If you encounter problems with leaf and stem blight -- which begins with brown spots on the leaves that spread to the stems -- don't use heavy mulch. Rake fallen leaves and diseased plants out of the bed. Euonymus scale can also be a problem. If it occurs, prune out infested plants and spray the others with dormant oil in early spring. Root rot can occur in wet soils.  Fertilize with VigoroŽ All Purpose Plant Food when necessary.
